New rules govern use of fireworks in Cobourg

COBOURG -Members of the Cobourg Fire Department are reminding people on this Victoria Day weekend to be cautious with handling of fireworks.

The Town of Cobourg's web-site has listed a number of new bylaws as of Jan. 1, 2011 regarding fireworks.

No fireworks can be set off other than Victoria Day and Canada Day, and the three days leading up to each holiday.

No fireworks can be discharged except between dusk and 11 p.m.

No one under 18 years of age can set off fireworks, other than a sparkler, which can be enjoyed by a young person under the supervision of an adult.

No one shall discharge consumer fireworks on any land they do not own without obtaining written permission from the owner.

Consumer fireworks cannot be discharged within 15 metres of a structure.

There are also fees for permits regarding the sale and discharge of certain fireworks.

A $100 permit is required for consumer fireworks at a public exhibition (required for displays over 100 kg).

Although there is no fee, a permit is required for consumer fireworks for displays over 10 kg, but under 100 kg.

For those not following the bylaw, could be charged and face stiff fines.

Captain Aaron Blair of the Cobourg Fire Department said that under no circumstances should anyone throw sparklers into the air.

"We want everyone to have fun this Victoria Day weekend, but we also want everyone to be safe."
